INFORMATION FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

Generous Adventures (GA) helps non-profit organizations raise money.  We sell donated trips and accommodations in our online auction and have been giving our profits to carefully selected organizations benefiting people and places around the world, since 1997. GA is the only all-travel benefit auction on the Internet and we receive over 250,000 hits to our website/month.  Our audience consists of professionals traveling 6-7 times/year for leisure, whose incomes are higher than the U.S. national average.
All Generous Adventures beneficiaries must have one of the following:

  • USA: IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit status
  • Canada: 248(1) of the Income Tax Act that has a registration number issued by the Department of National Revenue
  • Equivalent documentation from the country of operation

We work with educational, service, health and environmental organizations.   For the moment, religious and political organizations are not included.

We offer two ways for non-profit organizations to benefit from our auctions.

  1. General Auction
  2. Network Auctions

General Auction

In our General Auction, Generous Adventures’ panel of advisors selects three or four non-profit organizations as beneficiaries. These beneficiaries share the balance of the quarterly profits from the sales of all trips and accommodations on www.generousadventures.com. Bidders select from these non-profit organizations when they make a bid. Only the choice of the winning bidder will receive funds from the sale of a trip or accommodation. Unfortunately, this sometimes ends up looking like a popularity contest between beneficiaries and for smaller non-profit organizations, it has proven to be a not so profitable means of fundraising.

We have donated 100% of our net profit - approximately 45% of our gross income from our general auction, to worldwide charities since we began in 1997. Generous Adventures is a 'no-frills' organization. We employ one full-time staff member, two part-time staff, and five members of an extended support team, almost all of whom volunteer a portion of their time.

All beneficiaries must apply to and be approved by Generous Adventures’ panel of advisors. We encourage interested charities to submit a one-page letter of request for support, including your mission statement to the land or email address below. Be sure and include your organizations plans for publicizing your presence as a beneficiary on www.generousadventures.com. Our review panel meets in June. Once selected, each organization is included in our general auction for approximately three months (three auction closings).

A Note to Consider: If you are selected as a beneficiary with Generous Adventures, we recommend you inform your members and supporters by letter or newsletter, link to www.generousadventures.com from your website, and/or otherwise notify your constituency. We have learned that the more this is done, the more your organization is likely to be selected by bidders as the recipient of funds.

Network Auctions
We sell your auction items for you.  No application necessary.

Of the two fundraising opportunities we offer nonprofit organizations through Generous Adventures Travel Auctions, Network Auctions offer the greatest potential for profit. In these auctions, your organization secures donated trips or accommodations, adhering to simple standards set by Generous Adventures.  Generous Adventures then lists the donation on www.generousadventures.com, advertises, sells and follows up on these trips.  75% of the proceeds from the sale of these offers go to the participating nonprofit organization.

Benefits to your organization:
• Tap into funds outside your local community
• Receive national and international publicity
• Fundraising made simple: No meetings to hold.  No event to produce.  No volunteers to manage. No advertising necessary.

Generous Adventures provides the following services:
• Free consultation
• Upload of all trips and accommodation descriptions onto website
• Includes trip/accommodation donor’s photo on auction website
• Links to donor’s email address and website (in two places)
• Maintains online auction
• Tracks all traffic to provider’s website
• Answers all auction-related emails and phone calls
• Sends email notices and newsletters to registered bidders regarding auction close dates
• Notifies high bidders of their wins
• Notifies trip/accommodation donor of high bidders and send thank-you letters
• Collects funds and pay credit card fees
• Disburses funds to nonprofit organization at the end of the auction
• Mails gift certificates to high bidders
• Publicizes Generous Adventures Travel Auction

Nonprofit Organization’s Responsibilities:
• Follow Generous Adventures Guidelines (see bottom of page).
• Secure donated offer and gift certificate (this can be a one-paragraph communication)
• Email or snail mail/deliver gift certificate to GA
All offers listed on GA website must have a $200 minimum value.

Generous Adventures strongly recommends that you inform your membership and supporters of the auction via newsletter/email/other.
Generous Adventures has been operating since 1997, and has never experienced a credit card dispute.  However, in the event that a credit card is disputed, GA will attempt to remedy that dispute.  If GA is unable to remedy said dispute, GA will credit the client with 25% of the amount and refer them to your organization for the balance.

Donations

It’s important to know that soliciting donations from businesses for this type of project is different than what you may have experienced in past fundraising projects.  When businesses understand that they will be listed on our website that receives over a ¼ million hits a month, it generally changes their response.  This becomes an in-kind marketing opportunity for them.  We link to their website and guarantee to send traffic to them. We also link to their email address, and include a description and photograph of their offer on our website.  We track the number of hits to their page and to their website.  We keep donors listed with a live link to their site for one year and give them in a permanent listing on our website.  We never take any commission on future sales.   There is also a tax benefit for donations and we encourage donors to contact their tax consultant for details.
Many providers donate several offers per year for the publicity.  All trips are offered for bid at 50% of their market value.
We ask that you do not contact any of the trip/accommodation providers we work with.  These are listed on our website in our SEARCH category as Past Providers Directory.  Before contacting potential donors, please check to be sure that your donor isn’t on this list.
Your organization may list as few as 1 (one) trip or accommodation with Generous Adventures.  There is no maximum number of listings you may offer.

Fees

There is no fee for participating in a Generous Adventures Travel Auction.  25% of the gross sales are retained by Generous Adventures for auction and merchant services. 75% is sent by check to you within thirty days of the close of the auction.  If an item does not sell on its planned closing date, we will automatically offer it in the next auction, providing the valid dates do not expire.
